Can I put a server CPU on a desktop motherboard?
I found a refurbished workstation (HP d330) which supports Intel's Socket 775 processor line. I will be using this machine for my web, game, and mail server at once. It'll have 4GB RAM and enough HDD space to work.
My final question is this:
I found an Intel Xeon CPU (socket 775) and since it is that socket it will fit on the board. Is it safe to do so? The board is a workstation/desktop motherboard, but the applications the server will run won't require INTENSE processing... hence the DDR333 RAM.
The only reason I want to use a server CPU instead of a Core 2 Duo, for instance, is because it'll be a server -- running constantly. I know that server CPU's are made to handle non-stop running, compared to desktop CPU's, which safely handle 8-12hour (usually) runs.
So, is it safe? Would you do it? Please let me know, I need to decide VERY soon...
It will work just fine with a good spread of thermal paste, and the socket 775 heatsink, and fan in place, it will run like any other.
