Have you ever said one of these phrases only to have your hopes and dreams crushed because your computer ran out of power...literally?
You are not alone. Most people who have purchased a computer from any major PC manufacturer are using a finely tuned product. It was designed to be as efficient as possible for the hardware you bought. If you need to upgrade or replace once of the core pieces of hardware like the Video Card, Harddrive, or CPU, the PC you purchased might not have the right sized Power Supply to get the job done. Many entry level computers are shipped from their factories with only a large enough power supply to drive the hardware...typically...under 400 watts. if you are trying to keep up with the video games you love and need to upgrade the Video Card or want to get into Video editing, a 350 watt power supply wont be enough. Most of todays mid to high end video cards need at least a 400 watt power supply with special connectors.
If you are doing the work yourself...make sure you take a long hard look at the power supply. If you are having a repair shop do the work, make sure to ask them what they think about the power supply rating and if that should be upgraded as well. Call the computer repair shop and talk to them. If they are genuinely interested in empowering you as a user of technology, they will be more than happy to answer as many questions as you have.
