Is it good to have a powerful 1000w PSU even if your PC is estimated to only use 650w?

I am planning to build a computer with these specs:

Motherboard - ASUS Maximus Formula Republic of Gamers iX38 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX
CPU - Intel Q9450 (quad-core) 2.6GHz
2x2GB of RAM
1TB
Blu-ray drive
Ati HD4870 (i am later expecting to get another one of these and use it in crossfire, then possibly add another 1TB and a faster blu-ray drive)

All of this in an:
Antec Nine Hundred 900 - Gaming Case with 200mm Top Fan (which is packed full of fans)

So i was intending to buy the Antec TruePower Quattro 1000W PSU, however i have been told not to buy a power supply if it is going to be underused as it can cause damage to the components of the PC, what do you recommend?

You're not going to damage anything running a big PSU. Good idea to look ahead and go with a PSU you can run your hardware with when you upgrade. I run 2 4870s in Crossfire in my Vista Gaming rig that has 3 hard drives, 2 DVD-Rom drives, floppy drive, TV tuner, sound card and a ton of LED fans, UV tubes etc, on a PC Power and Cooling Turbo Power 860watt PSU. Only thing about the massive PSUs is that they have an efficiency band and if you run them on rigs not using much of their massive power you may not get get into the 80% plus efficiency band but, even then, that's no biggie cuz they are still more efficient than a cheapo PSU. Althou I am a real Antec fan the Quattro 1000watt is not highly revered by those who bought it and reviewed it at Newegg. It is on the list of ATI cerified PSUs, thou:

Good choice going with an X38 board that runs both slots at X16 with 2 4870s. I contacted ATI and they confirmed my suspicions that you need both graphics slots running at full-blown X16 to handle the massive bandwidth of the 4870s DDR5 memory. Why I went with an Asus X48 board.
I suggest you consider this PSU. It's ATI certified for 2 4870s and has one massive 64amp +12V rail and a 7 year warranty. I use it in my rig with 2 4870s and its awesome.

Note: The "800 watt" shown in the ad is a misprint. As you can see if you read the description its a 860 watt PSU.(860 watt continuous-930 watt peak)
