How to remove thermal compound off a processor.?
I have an intel i7 processor and I am planning on using the heatsink/fan that came with it to start off. How would I go about removing the thermal compound from the processor when I buy a new heatsink/fan so I can apply the new thermal paste?
To be more detailed. It's the thermal pad that comes on the stock i7 core processors heatsink.
A simple way is to use a single edge razor blade and gently scrap the thermal compound off the surface of the CPU and off the old heatsink. Just be easy and don't dig the outside edges of the razor into the case of the CPU or the aluminum surface of the old heatsink. You may have to rub a little with a paper towel afterwards. Just make sure you always have a good hold on the CPU or old heatsink while you're cleaning them off.
