My kids wore an Obama stickers on picture day. Is it legal for their principal to tell them to remove it?

Notes are sent home days before school telling parents that kids do not have to wear uniform on picture day. He's our President! Other kids wear Cinderella and Barbie pictures and no one says anything!

Assuming this is a public school, it's true that schools may have dress codes and principals are well within their rights to enforce those codes. However, these codes and the actions of officials are limited by the Constitution.

As the Supreme Court determined in Tinker v. Des Moines, students retain their First Amendment rights even in the school setting. So long as your children's stickers weren't vulgar or causing any disruption, I'd say their principal had no business telling your children to remove them.
