why not reducing shuttle speed before entering atmosphere using jet power to avoid the heat produced by fricti?
Jet engines don't work in space (you need a medium like air or water), so you can't use them before you enter the atmosphere.
There are various other types of engine one could use in space like Ion propulsion (my fav).
Like someone said the main problem with additional propulsion/thrusters would be fuel weight at takeoff...costs would skyrocket (pun intended).
Current procedures and heat sheilding are for the most part more than adequate, the problems arise when something goes wrong -cracked ceramic plates for example.
*the engines and thrusters on the space shuttle is mostly used for maneuvering -any reduction of speed outside the atmosphere is a result of a change in orbital position.
