Seagate Cheetah 15k rpm performance increase?
I'm running my system off a Seagate Barracuda but would like to see if I could make this even faster, and just use this ridiculous 500gb system drive as extra storage. I did some research into SSDs, but a lot of people are saying because they're new, they don't offer any earth-shattering performance boost. So I looked into faster hard drives and stumbled upon the 15k rpm Seagate Cheetah. What kind of performance boost would I see if I got one of those to use as a system drive instead of the 7200rpm barracuda that I'm using now?
The 15k Seagate Cheetah is the fastest thing out there for regular computer use if you partition it.
Huge physical drives are slow unless you put the OS in a confined space up front. The ssd's have very quick seek times, but the wear leveling firmware slows them down eventually. The ssd's don't crash if you bump them while they're running. That makes them ideal for a laptop.
For a desktop or server the Cheetah is a better buy.
