How can I increase ram on dell pc?
I want to increase the ram from 256 to 1000 (maximum it will take) on my Dell Dimension 2350. Should I leave the original module in the pc and install the additional ram or remove the original and install a new one. They seem to be sold in 512 mb each, so maybe I could buy one of those and just insert it. I've never tried this, but it seems pretty easy to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
the actual installation of RAM is simple, it can only fit one way, pull the tabs out and the old module comes out, then placed and push down, until the tabs "click" in place. As far as the type goes, you are correct in that the cap is 1GB. What you do need to know is a couple things
1) your cap is 1 GB and you have 2 connectors...this means that each connecter can only take a cap of 512 MB a piece at most, it may not be safe to install one 1GB module in one slot.
2) Per Dell's site on your system type, it uses PC2100 RAM. When you get your RAM, You need to make sure that is this type. Let the seller/sales know that you need (one or two stick of 512 MB, PC2100), and they can get you the right one (if they have it in stock).
3) A good rule of thumb for most machines. Remember the slot that the current module is installed in. This is actually designated in your machine as "slot 1" and the other part is "slot 2". The idea is that your greater size module goes in the first slot. This means that if you get one 512 stick, you will need to remove the 256 MB stick, put it in the other slot on purpose and install the 512 where the 256 was. If you get 2, 512 stricks, then it obviously dosent matter, since you will simply pul 256 anyway. Hope this helps!
