Computer won't turn on. No lights/fans. Power supply?
As the title suggests, my computer won't turn on. Yesterday, I left it in fine working condition. I came back to find it completely shut down. No lights were on; the power button was unresponsive. It is plugged into a surge protector and all the other devices plugged into it work perfectly. I tried other outlets; no success. I opened up the computer, checked all the connections and couldn't find anything wrong.
I am thinking it is a power supply problem just based on my initial thoughts and my own research into the subject. But I don't know for sure.
My computer is:
Sony Vaio Desktop PC
Model #: PCV-RZ 34G
My power supply is:
NMB
Model #: MJPC-300A2
If it is a power supply problem, is there any (reasonably priced) alternative to the power supply I have now? Cosmetics are not important. I am somewhat handy with a computer; I have no trouble working on one and installing things myself.
Any help in this matter is GREATLY appreciated!
Unfortunately, with the information at hand, it's impossible to say for sure what happened. but the fact that it won't even boot up enough to give error beeps does suggest that power is not getting to or through the montherboard. It almost has to be a PSU failure or some part in the motherboard frying. If you want to diagnose further, a specialty computer parts store (and maybe even a place like Bust Buy) would sell PSU testers. The simple ones, which just plug into the PSU and have a few LEDs to indicate power flowing through them, usually only cost $10-15. Just make sure the one you buy has the correct plug design (check your computer's Owner's manual), as there have been a few different power connection designs on motherboards over the years.
As for a replacement power supply, that shouldn't be too bad. Based on the model number of what you have, it's a fairly safe guess to say that it is a 300 Watt. Assuming you arent a major upgrader (particularly in graphics cards), that's enough to suit your needs. Bump up to about 400 Watt if you do want high-end graphics at some point. Again, make sure you get the right plug design. I haven't been in the market for a PSU in a year or two, but the last one I got was 480W with a blue light inside, and it was only like $85 at a local specialty shop.
