Can I get video from my camcorder onto my computer when connected to my external hard drive?
I have a PC with no Firewire/IEEE 1394 port on it, and I want to load video from my Canon ZR830 camcorder. The only Firewire port is on my external backup drive. Is there a way to get my video onto my computer through the backup drive?
If you connect the camcorder directly to the drive, no. I presume the drive then connects to your computer using USB... This won't work. You are trying to use the drive as a "hub" and you still have to go through USB - which is why it won't work.
Your best (and only) option is to install a firewire port on the computer. If there is no expansion slot to add a firewire port, then another computer WITH an expansion slot or an existing, working, firewire port is required.
If you want to connect the camcorder directly to the drive and no computer - that won't work either. The drive needs some smarts - like those from Focus Enhancements (FireStore) - and the dumb computer hard drives are not set up to do what you want.
