Can a 1.73 GHz CPU support a memory upgrade with a 1GB, 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC2700 memory module?
I have an AMD Athlon XP 2100+
1.73 ghz CPU
and 224 MB RAM
Windows XP service pack 2
My computer has become really slow in it's old age, but I do not have the money for a new one. I was thinking about buying RAM, but I read that it will not do much without a faster CPU. Will I need to buy a new CPU, or will just 1 GB of extra RAM help me out?
It will take the 1GB and even it could go up another 256 or 512, but if you want to speed up your computer there are other things you could do:
1. Delete the programs that you don't use them at all at the moment.
2. My computer + right click on the main hard drive (usually is the Local drive C) then properties, then click on the disk clean up, after calculates it will give you another window, make sure every box is checked in there then click on Ok.
3. Do the disk defragment for more than 5 times, the one time it doesn't have a real impact.
4. Go to the control pannel and click on internet options, here you need to delete cockies and files, if you are using the internet explorer 7, you click only o where says delete at the Browsing history section. Then you are going to click on the last tab where it says Advanced: then you drag all the way down to the # 12 from bottom, it maybe one upper or down just look for the one says:
Empty Temporarty Internet Files folder when browser is closed, check the box that belongs to this one.
This will speed up very well, and each time you close your browser it will do it for you (Very good one, it cleans up after you).
5. Right click on my computer and click on properties, then go to the system restore tab, bring the arrow to the middle where it says 6 or 7, that's good enough for system restore point.
6. From there click on the Advanced tab and click on the Performance setting tab, then click on the Advanced tab, and click on Change tab in virtual memory section, then make sure the custom size is checked and then read the total paging file size for all drivers section it could tell you three things:
Minimum allowed: some number then MB (don't worry about this one)
Recommended: some number then MB, type this one in where it says Initial size (MB): Change whatever number is there to this number.
Then type the number 4096 where it says:
Maximum size (MB): type here 4096, then click on Ok.
Again on Ok. and Again on Ok. it will ask you to restart your computer, do it, and after you restart your computer, always allow 2 to 3 minutes to everything gets loaded, then you will see the difference of the things you just did (If you follow everything that I typed in Here, you maybe see the difference of 3 to 10 or even in some cases up to 20 times faster than before).
