Northbridge really hot?
My northbridge heatsink gets extremely hot when i'm using my computer, so much that it's too hot to touch. My motherboard is an ASUS P5Q SE2, and I haven't done any overclocking on my CPU or video card (9800GT). I would assume that the heatsink gets really hot because it has nearly no air circulation (the intel CPU fan is weak and doesn't blow much air over it, and the case air flow goes directly above the heatsink, too far away to make a difference), so there's pretty much an area of warm area around the heatsink. So is my northbridge getting too hot? And if it is does that mean my motherboard is defective? What should I do to cool down my northbridge?
Getting that hot can reduce your northbridge's life. Generally, it is expected that the CPU fan will blow air over the northbridge and that if your CPU fan is weak (or absent, such as if you use a water block) a separate fan to cool the northbridge may be necessary. I would recommend doing something to cool it down.
Possibilities include:
1) Change your CPU fan to one that does a better job of cooling your northbridge.
2) Change your BIOS configuration to keep the CPU fan spinning more even if the CPU is cool.
3) Add a separate fan to cool the northbridge. (Or you may be able to add a RAM fan that will blow spillover air onto the northbridge or a case side panel fan may work.)
4) Adjust the airflow in your case to better blow over the northbridge heat sink.
5) Improve the northbridge heat sink. Often it is poorly-coupled to the northbridge (sometimes no thermal compound is used) and often it is blocked by a sticker or cover that reduces airflow.
