Network Lan

How does a Local Area Network (LAN) work?
Can someone please explain to me in detail of how a LAN works?
1: Connect an Ethernet cable to the port on the back of your cable or DSL modem. If you are using a router, connect the other end to the port on the router labeled "Internet" or "WAN." If you are using a switch, connect the other end of the cable to one of the numbered ports. You may wish to devote the highest- or lowest-numbered port to this purpose so that it can be identified easily if you need to troubleshoot a network problem in the future.
#2: Plug the router or switch into a power outlet. You should begin to see activity lights blinking on both it and the modem.
#3: Turn a computer off. Connect an Ethernet cable to the back of the computer, and connect the other end to one of the numbered ports on the back of the router or switch. Turn the computer on. It should establish contact with the router or switch immediately. Open a web browser and confirm that the computer can get online.
#4: Repeat the previous step for all of your other computers.
