How do you solder a new laptop power jack to the motherboard?
I have a laptop motherboard with a broken power jack. Can anybody give me step by step instructions on how to desolder the jack, and then solder the new jack in its place?
I also saw a guy that soldered wires to the power jack contacts on the motherboard and then soldered the other end of the wires to the new power jack. This made a kind of "tail" and when the tail was secured, it prevented stress on the motherboard from plugging and unplugging the power supply. Does anyone know how to do this as well?
I would agree with the provious answers, low wattage soldering pencil, rosin core solder, and practice first on a throwaway piece of some electronic circuit board. If you overheat the board it can be damaged beyond repair. To remove the solder use solder wick, a kind of copper braid made for this purpose. This job is probably for more experienced hands than yours.
