old 90nm processor on newer 45nm motherboard?
Hi. I have an old processor(Intel pentium D 805, 2.66 GHz,775 pin socket package, 90nm technology)-motherboard(Mercury PI865D7) assembly which is working fine. however it uses DDR RAMs and AGP graphics card. Graphics card is gone by now and RAM is only 512 MB. Now question here is can I use another motherboard(Gigabyte G41M-ES2L). which is of course a newer board. although having 775 pin socket but it supports 45nm technology.
will it be ok to purchase this board for this processor or is there any other way to upgrade my system to DDR2 and PCI express.
well... package word was not important here. although I found it in ftp://download.intel.com/technology/silicon/silicon_paper_06.pdf but lets not talk about it.
so my processor is going to work as in the compatibility chart. will I have to do some adjustments such as bios upgrade or anything technical in order to do that.
45 nm and 90 nm does not refer to the package size.
It refers to the minimum width geometry of the microelectronics fabrication.
At any rate, it's best to get a new motherboard supporting the processor that you want. That way the BIOS on the motherboard can properly address the newer RAM that you plan on using.
If within your budget, I would opt for a motherboard that can handle the newer i7 processors. They use the newer, faster tri-channel RAMS (DDR3's).
