Which is better CCFL monitors or LED monitors?

Both the CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent) and LED (light emitting diode) acronyms are referring to the back light used in the monitor, not the quality of the LCD screen itself. LCD screens don't emit light, they must have a light behind the screens to shine through or you won't see anything. The type of light in the back, referred to as the "backlight" is the only difference in the two types you have listed. The LED type of backlight is newer, and is a solid state light source. It is less prone to blowing out, in other words. Also, depending on what layout of LEDs are used, provides a more even light across the screen and does not suffer from the bright edges you typically see in CCFL backlights. Another plus for LED is they use far less power, so they are great for portable use with battery power, like in laptops.
If I were getting a new desktop monitor today, I would prefer the LED, but also I would not hesitate to get a CCFL backlit LCD screen, as long as they are of sufficient quality. Chance are pretty good that the CCFL backlights will outlast the screen's life span anyway.
