What Processor can add to my Compaq Presario?
Im slowly learning about upgrading my computer since i upgraded to Windows 7 and added an extra 1tb hard drive which is nearly full my computer is running far to slow so im going to add 3 extra gb of ram.
I want to be able to open mutiple programs at the same time and to be able to search through my files quick which seems to be taking ages.
I've also been told i need to buy a Processor which i don't really understand the models? Do i need a new one?
I got this info from Crucial if this helps:
Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1GB
Available Memory Slots: 2
Total Memory Slots: 4
Dual Channel Support: Yes
CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
CPU Family: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+ Model 15, Stepping 2
CPU Speed: 2200 MHz
Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.
Thankyou to any answers!
I also want to be able to add an extra 1tb hard drive.
I believe your motherboard is a socket 939 motherboard. In which case the suggestion to put an i7 in the motherboard to be COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY WRONG. You can NOT mix and match AMD and Intel CPUs. I suspect that the best processor you can use would be the Athlon 64 X2, unless you're looking to replace your motherboard.
I suspect you're running a 32-bit OS. In that case, it is probably not necessary to install 4 GB of RAM - your OS won't allow you to use all of it at any rate. Go for either 1) another 1 GB module identical to the one you already have, or 2) go for the fastest memory you can in the motherboard, but more than 2 GB is getting to be wasted.
Adding another hard drive depends on whether you have some free space, free power, and a free cable slot in your computer. It is likely that your computer is old enough to run IDE cables. Unless you're running a system where your PSU (power supply) just barely can deliver enough power, buying and installing another hard drive in your computer should be pretty straightforward.
To get some more specs on your rig, try downloading and installing Speccy - http://www.piriform.com/speccy . It should tell you what motherboard you have, which would then tell you how fast RAM you can use, and tell you whether to buy a SATA or an IDE drive. Obviously, you could just buy an external hard drive - connecting it through USB2.0, and giving it external power - then you wouldn't have to fiddle with installing the thing.
