Keyword Density Explained
The following is a brief explanation (in non-techy jargon) on how to calculate the keyword density for a page.
The easiest way to figuring out the keyword density is to copy and past the content of your page (the content is the meat of the page, not including any code (HTML or otherwise)) into your preferred word processor. Use the word processor to determine the word count of the copied content. For Microsoft Office Word 2007 the word count can be found in the bottom left corner of the window. For earlier versions click File-> Properties ->Statistics ->Word Count. If you are using something other than Microsoft Word view the programs instructions or the built in help feature.
Now let's say the total word count is 250 and that you are optimizing that page with a single keyword. You will want to count the number of times the keyword appears within the content. One way to determine the number of times the keyword appears is to manually count it. I recommend using the find and replace feature built into all major word processors. For Microsoft word hold down the Ctrl button and press the F key. Click the replace tab. Copy and paste in the keyword in both the edit and replace box. Click replace. The word processor will replace each occurrence of the keyword with itself, but provide you the total number of times the word was replaced.
Let us assume the number of occurrence the keyword appeared is 10 times. In determining the keyword density you will divide the number of times the keyword appears by the total word count of your content. In this example it would be 10 divided by 250, which equals .04.
Because keyword density is referred to as a percentage of the total word count of a page, you will need to multiply the above result (.04) by 100. This will give you the percentage.
For this example the calculation for would be: 0.04 x 100 = 4%
Therefore the keyword density for our content is 4%.
In general the best keyword density, to boost search engine ranking, is between 2 and 5%. Don't stress however on have each page be at the top in keyword density. Having pages fluctuate between 2 and 5% is ok, at least one of your pages will be listed. As outlined in our Selecting The Right Keywords article you will want to structure your site to have the higher density pages appear first before the lower density pages.
