A good rule of thumb, if you want to maximize the life of a lead-acid battery, is that the maximum charging current should be no more than 1/10th of the rated amp hour capacity. This is known as a "10C" charge rate. So, for example, if your battery is rated for 7ah, then the charging current should be limited to 0.7 Amps.
The number before the C, in theory, is the number of hours it should take to charge a fully discharged battery with an ideal charger. It could take longer if the charge profile is not ideal.
You might prefer to charge at a 5C rate (that is, 1/5 of the Ah capacity, or in your case, 1.4A). The battery probably will not survive as many charge/discharge cycles that way, but it might be worth it for the convenience of a shorter charge time.
I would not try to charge a battery any faster than 5C unless I was using a charger that was specifically approved by the manufacturer of the equipment in which the battery was installed. High-rate charging can generate a lot of heat and/or explosive hydrogen gas. It's not just the life of the battery, but also your personal safety that is at stake.
