How do I get information off an old laptop hard drive, using another laptop?
My laptop recently died. I think it was the motherboard, and the hard drive is okay. I bought another laptop, but how do I get my important files off of the hard drive from the broken laptop?
It's going to cost you about $35 all up to do this...
You're looking for a USB to IDE converter, so you can plug the old drive on as an external drive. You also need an adaptor from the normal wide IDE connection to the narrower one used on laptop drives, which are smaller.
This site looks about he cheapest.....hunt around as there are huge price differences

search on the two adapator names to get more sites, or best a warehouse you can go to in person.
It's a good investment, as it gives you a permanent extra drive for the new laptop.
IF you don't want to reuse the old drive, and don't have a huge lot of data to take off, youi can put it into the new laptop and copy the files to a USB memory stick, if you already have one.
Start the machine in Safe Mode, otherwise the old drive's Windows will go "finding new hardware" for hours.
