why the insulation of of the coils in electric motor may be damage when i use long cable connect to inverter?
The output waveform of a variable frequency drive (VFD) is a series of square pulses that simulates a sine wave. The waveform is mathematically equivalent to an series of sine waves with frequencies that are multiples (harmonics) of the frequency of the simulated sine wave. The voltage of the square pulses rises and falls very quickly when the switching devices (usually IGBTs) turn on and off. This leads to very high frequency harmonic voltage components.
When the high frequency harmonics reach the motor, they are reflected because the motor impedance at the harmonic frequency is higher than the source impedance. The reflected waves can combine with the incoming waves to create voltage impulses that are much higher than the peak voltage of the VFD output. The high voltage pulses can damage the motor winding insulation.
To reduce the risk of motor insulation damage:
1. Use motors that have winding insulation that is designed for VFD waveforms.
2. Use the lowest possible VFD switching frequency setting.
3. Use the shortest possible motor cable.
4. Use VFD output inductors or dv/dt filters that are designed to reduce reflected voltage.
Using shielded cable will not protect the motors but will reduce electromagnetic interference with other equipment, another problem related to VFD waveforms.
