What's the best CPU people told me it's the Xeon but according to Intel.com it would be an i7?
If you are a gamer and a PC user, the i7 2600k is the fastest CPU on the market core for core. Single threaded or lightly multithreaded applications (like games, and virtually every program you run) will run faster than they would on any other CPU. The i5 2500k is almost identical, and at $250, is one of the best value processors out there. You get ALOT of bang for a decent price.
If you do really, really heavy video editing, rendering, or use any sort of expensive software that actually takes advantage of more than 4 threads, the 6 core i7 990x will have the advantage of 2 extra (but slightly slower) cores over the 2600k. However, if you get that, get ready to pay $1000 just for the CPU.
If you're a professional, run heavy scientific computation programs, or you want to run a huge server, you would want a 6 core or 8 core intel xeon processor, or a 12 core AMD opteron processor. Some motherboards even allow you to run 2 or 4 of these high end CPUs in the same machine. These have more raw muscle than desktop CPUs, but because of slower individual core speeds, special memory and motherboard requirements, and extreme price (over $1000 or $1500), these processors aren't practical unless your paycheck is determined by processor speed.
