Stock AMD 4800 X2 939 fan/heatsink with Intel Q6600 Possible?
I'm buying an OEM Intel Q6600 Qaud-core without the fan and new motherboard and ram. I currently have an AMD 4800 X2 939 processor with the stock fan/heat sink. I'm wondering if it will be safe/non damaging to use the stock fan from my amd processor with the new intel processor for a few days until I get a new fan/heat sink delivered.
The AMD 4800's fan/heatsink are made for connection to the 939 socket which uses a spring loaded connector to hold the heatsink down. The Intel C2Q6600 uses a Socket 775, Which uses a 4 screw type retention. Unless your heatsink for the AMD is an aftermarket cooler, and included various adapters, this will not work.
Assuming of course that you bought a different mother board (as the Intel C2Q6600 WILL NOT fit in the AMD 939 socket) the heatsinks will not be interchangeable. Just buy one designed for the new socket, and wait for it to get to you. No reason to even risk destroying a $279 processor.
