Removing CPU Fan From Mobo?
Hi there,
I have an Intel CPU Fan, which has four plastic pieces which clip into the motherboard. They kind of push through four holes on the board, and have the two white clips and a black piece which is connected to the fan itself in between. I've tried pulling it up, squeezing the white parts together with no success. I'm not sure how to remove the fan. Does anyone know how?
The fan is connected to a heat-sink (the metal bit with the fins on) and the frame is connected to the mainboard. But I do know what you mean, trying to get the pins to disengage is a bit of a puzzle that is actually quite easy to solve.
On the top of each pin is a slot (the plastic pieces you mention in your question), these are made for a flat bladed screwdriver. Turn the pin in the opposite direction of the arrow (if you look carefully there should be one) but it will only turn in one direction. Do this for all four pins, then pull the pin upwards and it will release the inner peg from those white bits causing them to contract in the mainboard pilot holes and you can then remove the fan and heat-sink assembly.
To re-fit the assembly make sure you turn the pins back again and that the pegs inside the white clips are not near the bottom, just pull them up to be sure. Put the four pins over the holes in the mainboard and then press on two at a time (in opposite corners) and they should click into place and lock, do the other two and your fan and heat-sink assembly should be secure.
