What is the best Linux distro for a high performance PC?

My specs are:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 running at 2.4Ghz
nVidia GeForce 8600GT 1GB memory
4GB RAM
I want one that will let me get the most out of my system bearing in mind I've never used linux...

What do you plan on doing with it? For general use, I prefer open SuSE. Some like other distributions, such as Ubuntu. However, I have had mixed results from other distros. My results have usually been best with SuSE. However, make sure you go to nVidia's website and download the most recent linux drivers for the video card because I do not believe they are available in any of the SuSE repositories.

While SuSE is fairly user friendly and you could use it, I am not completely sure how it would be for someone completely new to Linux. I think that person could manage, but I have had more experience with *nix systems than you have so I have forgotten what it is to be completely new to linux. While I personally don't like Ubuntu that much, it is ok and a lot of people like it. When I tried it in the past it didn't like my system very much and I had problems getting everything to work well. However, this was on a much older version so they have probably fixed those problems. Also, ubuntu has a huge user base and great support in documentation on its site and in forums on its site. You can usually find solutions by search their documentation and, if you cannot, you can get help by posting a question in their forums. This may be very useful for someone that is not familiar with linux. If you want to see how Ubuntu works without installing it, try one of their live CDs. However, it will run much slower than an actual installation on the hard drive and it probably won't have nVidia's drivers on it. Live CD's are generally used to let people get a taste for linux and experiment with it... not use it on a regular basis. Also live CDs are generally smaller than full blown installation CDs or DVD's and do not have as much software.

With live CDs, you may also want to try out other versions of Ubuntu, such as Kubuntu. Kubuntu uses the KDE desktop manager, where Ubuntu uses Gnome by default. The different desktop managers can give a different feel, even though most of the other programs are identical. I believe Suse also has a live cd.

I would recommend you try out Ubuntu (and maybe a couple of its variants) or SuSE. Do get the 64-bit versions though.
