3 Red Ring of Death - It Can Be Fixed
Anyone who owns a Microsoft Xbox 360 console, especially one of the first editions, has probably encountered the 3 red ring of death at some point. As common as it was in the early stages of the next-gen console war, Microsoft has fortunately been able to correct this error, though at costly warranty fulfillment's and unit replacement. Caused by a variety of part malfunctions and some hasty design decisions, there are several reasons why it could occur.
In many cases, problems with the soldering process were the cause of the quirk. For instance, the process itself was performed at a lower temperature than recommended. When inadequate heat is applied to the solder joints they, of course, eventually break down, even under normal circumstances. This is the case with the heatsink clamp on the motherboard which warps from overheating. Also, the Xbox 360 uses a lead free solder. This makes the unit safer for children, but they didn't realize how brittle the joints would become from heat exposure over time, and that they would eventually crack, which would disturb the energy distribution.
Microsoft also made some mistakes in the earlier models that could have been prevented. For instance, the graphics chip that Microsoft designed in house dissipated too much heat. They did this in attempt to save millions of dollars but in the end honored too many warranty replacements for it to make a difference and wound up hiring a more experienced company to design them. Also, some of the heatsinks still had some foil on them, which would increase the amount of heat it conducted. Removing the foil would solve the problem, although if you did it yourself you would still need to find a way to reapply the thermal compound.
All in all, the 3 red ring of death, was ultimately caused by problems resulting in overheating of the unit.
