How do I set up my Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ Hard Drive HDD?
My last ATA hard drive failed, and this is a clean install with an SATA drive. I have connected the power cable and data cable, but when I run setup, the computer doesn't recognize the new drive!
Thanks Oracle, how can I tell if my motherboard supports 3.0? I imagine that is probably the problem but I want to make sure before going out to buy yet another cable!

1. make sure the SATA port is active in the BIOS
2. if you were previously using an ATA drive, you may have an older motherboard that may not support newer 3.0 GB/sec drives. if that is the case, you will need to put a "jumper" in your hard drive. this is just a little piece that comes with your hard drive that plugs right in to it next to where the data and power cords plug in. the manual should tell you exactly how to do that
No, your motherboard does not support 3.0 GB/sec. to make your hard drive run in 1.5 GB/sec mode, you can try putting in the jumper. you should not need to go buy anything. the jumper should come with the drive. anyways theres an area of pins on your hard drive next to where you connect the power and data cables. there are 2 rows of 4 pins. the jumper is a little plastic piece that you can put onto some of the pins. i think the way to make the hard drive run in 1.5 GB/sec mode is as follows:

you can check the hard drive manual just to make sure this is the correct jumper setting.
