Which backlight system is better in a LED HDTV: Full array LED or edge lit LED?
it is funny, I went to see two Sharp Aquos LED tvs side by side the LC-46LE700UN which was last year's model and the LC-46LE810UN which is this year's model with that new quattron that has the extra yellow and still last year's model the LC-46LE700UN looks better with deeper blacks and more vivid colors and if I am correct the secret might be in the backlight system, the LC-46LE700UN uses a full array backlight system and the LC-46LE810UN uses the edge lit, someone give me your opinion on this, thanks.
This matter was tested by Consumer Reports recently. Theoretically, full-array backlighting brings a big advantage with "local dimming," allowing specific areas of the screen to be illuminated to varying degrees by the backlight. But they noted that imperfect local dimming can cause odd halo effects around portions of the image and they were motivated to turn the feature off. (It's interesting that the set even allows you to turn it off -- that tells you something.)
They like the edge lit LED sets about as well and noted that those models allow sets to be "stylishly thin."
