What kind of processor should I buy?
I want to build a powerful PC. I want it for graphics, gaming, and heave burning of dvd's and cd's. I just don't want it to lag with whatever I decide to do. This is a personal pet project of mines. I want the computer to be more powerful then what I want to use it for. I am thinking of buying the ASUS Striker II formula LGA 775 NVIDIA nFORCE 780I SLI ATX Intel Motherboard. What type of processor should I buy? can someone please explain the different types of processors, and their uses?
or would AMD be better? if I go AMD, then I would need a different motherboard.
should it use hyper threading technology?
Hyper threading is old tech, replaced by multiple cores.
Thats an excellent motherboard, but you will only get full use out of it if you have two extremely powerful graphics cards, since the only thing it has over a lower 700 series board is that it has two dedicated pci x16 channels as apposed to splitting one.
If you are editing videos, the best cpu for the cost is the 2.4ghz core quad, it is the second fastest out there for video editing and in the top 5 for everything else, and its less than 1/4 the cost of the cpus that beat it outside of video editing.
Now if you want it to be smooth and responsive, youll need very fast hard drives. It doesnt matter if you have a powerful cpu if your hard drive is slow, it will still take a long time to load or will be laggy. The HDD is probably the hardest thing to pick out, since two hard drives with the same size, interface, and rpm can have drastically different performance.
Right now the fastest drives out there are the 1tb samsung spinpoint F1, and the 750gb st37500330as seagate barracuda. They are faster than most RAID arrays, they can both maintain 82-91mb/s, or about 3 times the speed of an average hard drive. They are not unreasonably expensive either.
Graphicswise, you either want to go with at least a nvidia 8800gtx, or a pair of 8600gts. The 8600gts is actually more powerful than the 8800gs and considerably cheaper, but the 8800gtx blows them both away. If you can spend the extra $500 for one, go for it. If you cant, a pair of 8600gts are about $300, and a single one will still max out most games. I have one 8600gs, the one down from the gts, and I can max out FSX, but the 8800gs cannot.
Youll will want to get 2-4gb of ram, 2gb will be enough for any games I know of, but will easily be maxed out for video editing. Speed is not all that important. Benchmarks show that size has much more effect than speed, and you really only need 800mhz ram for the core 2 quad, which saves you a buttload over the cpus that need 1000 and 1333 mhz ram.
