what is the difference between a rear projection HDTV and a flat-panel HDTV?
I am shopping for a high definition TV for Christmas and am looking at a rear projection lcd and a flat panel lcd. Besides their shape, what is the difference or advantages between the two, if any?
"Projection" TVs are units where the image you see is PROJECTED onto a screen, where a flat panel unit is either a plasma or LCD screen that changes colour according to electrical charges sent to the screen.
As for picture quality, rear projections are not as "sharp," but tend to be "more real." Also, the picture quality differences between LCD and Plasma are negligible, but Plasmas are more expensive up front, and in the long run, since they have to be recharged periodically.
But, if you're a gamer, CRT is still king!
