My new power supply that I've just purchased comes with a blue switch that increases the fan speed. Use it?
I just bought a new 650 watt power supply for my PC, and I noticed that it comes with a little blue switch on the back that, when activated, activates a glowing blue LED and kicks the fan speed up quite a bit. I left it on for an hour or so with this "overdrive" functionality disabled, and everything seemed to be fine. But should I use this? Why do I have this functionality? Will it degrade the quality of my fan/power supply faster?
If you do any 3D gaming (Unreal Tournament, Quake, Oblivion, whatever) then turn it up when you're gaming. The LED is probably there to make the computer look cooler if you were to take it to a LAN party. (Assuming it was installed in a case with a side window.) My powersupply automatically regulates it's own fan as well as some of the case fans using temperature sensors on the motherboard, it cranks up the fans quite a bit when doing 3D gaming, for a little bit after I stop gaming, (letting the temp drop back down to normal) and sometimes when something really CPU/Harddrive intensive is going on. (like a full virus scan)
