Is Optical Fibre Simple, Half-Duplex, Duplex?
i need the answer for my college works.
The transmitter and receiver system at either end will determine if the optical fibre is being used in simplex or duplex modes. Duplex means that data is going both ways through the conducting medium at the same time. With electricity this requires two conductors otherwise the electric currents will interfere with each other. With light transmission unless the lasers have identical wavelengths then there is little or no interference between the two beams as they pass each other so full duplex is possible. The practicalities however are that in order to have both transmitter and receiver connected at the same time to one end of an optical fibre would cause problems of reflection and reduced signal. As a result most duplex optical fibre cables are twin fibre assemblies so are similar to electrical duplex systems.
