what is the advantage of determining the density of a lot of pennies compared to one?
in chem lab today we had to find the density of pennies instead of just finding the density of one penny we found the density of 35 pennies it could be any number but 1 and we found the volume by ?distillation? of water and the mass by a machine thing instead of doing it by one penny and dividing its mass by its volume so how is or what is the advantage in determining it this way? I'm thinking something to do with significant figures?!?!
Yes, it increases the number of significant figures. But from a statistical standpoint, it also smooths out variations between pennies. So if you only found the density of one penny and it was underweight, you would get an incorrect answer for the density of pennies. But if you do 35 pennies, it's likely that you'll have enough heavier pennies to negate the effect of the one (or a few) oddball penny.
