does a a dell dimension 4600 PSu have a internal fuse? the model number is NPS-250 kb f?
The computer got hit by lightning, when you try to power up nothing happens. the power button does not light up, but if you take the cover off the led on the motherboard is soled green. Do I need to replace PSU, or motherboard.
or should I just buy a PSU and try that.
I can't say if there is a fuse in there or not, but i do know that it's a known fact that some 4600's shipped with bad or weak supplies. Do you have another power supply you can try in it? That would be the easiest test. It's a standard pinout wiring so any standard PSU with enough power should work.
I have a Dell 4600 myself that had the PSU die in it early last year. I can't say that I bothered to check the LED inside, I knew it was most likely the PSU and had one in another computer to test it with so I just pulled it out, slapped it in and it worked, so I bought a new one for it. It would be a shame for you to buy one without being able to try another one in it first. You could also grab one of the molex connectors and use a volt meter to test the 12V and 5V, not that that will tell everything but it might tell you enough.
When mine died I just bought a new, stronger, better, Antec 350W power supply for it from Newegg after confirming that the PSU was the problem. I upgraded the video card, put in a fast 250GB 7200rpm drive, added a DVD burner, a high end sound card, and increased the RAM to 2GB, and now almost 1-1/2 years on it and not any problems since then even with this FX5900-GS card sucking up a lot more power than the stock onboard video. I'm hoping to get another few years out of it
