What would perform better? Two 256mb 400mhz DDR memory sticks or four 256mb 266mhz DDR sticks? (dual channel)
I have a dell 400sc PC that supports dual channel memory configuration and 400mhz DDR ram. The existing two sticks of 256mb 400mhz ram have ECC so it's more expensive than usual to buy more. I came across four sticks of 256mb 266mhz DDR ram but am unsure if it will give me a performance increase. I guess a third option would be to buy four sticks of 512mb 400mhz DDR and not use any of the above, but I would rather not spend more money if possible.
If you were running with ECC ram, you'll have to make sure your new ones are also ECC enabled.. Back to your question, it really depends on what kind of applications you run. If you run any database intensive applications that require accessing large amounts of information, go with the four sticks of 256mb 266mhz.. but if the applications dont access large amounts of information, the 400mhz memory may be your best bet
