I have damaged something on the CPU heatsink or fan?
It was made of plastic and there are four of them. They attach the heatsink and fan to the motherboard but they wore away because I put it back on wrong. What are those four things called, and how much would they cost to replace? Any other way of keeping the heatsink in place without replacing it?
They don't turn! Their just pegs, they merely insert and clip into gaps in the motherboard, but they have worn away and won't click anymore.
From the sounds of it that's an Intel heatsink / fan and you've damaged the push in clips that hold it on to the CPU (very easily done unfortunately). Once they're damaged I'm afraid there is no way of repairing them.
Just incase you don't know however, you twist them 1/4 turn and gently pull to release them and they simply push in and click when installing. You have to make sure they have gone through the holes to the other side of the motherboard before you push however, it can be a little tricky.
I would recommend you buy a new heatsink and fan setup if they're definately bust. They cost between 15 and 30 pounds for a decent one. Make sure you get the correct one for your CPU socket as they don't fit all types.
