Could this mean a bad motherboard?
This is concerning a socket 939 machine i built early last year. The motherboard is an ASROCK Dual SATAII, it has 2x1 GB Corsair Value Select RAM, and an Athlon FX-60 processor. On at least 5 occasions now, my XP installation has ceased booting for no apparent reason. Every time i just reformat and reinstall XP and then some time down the road it claims nothing's available to boot from. This last time it happened on a hard drive that checked out fine with SpinRite.
There was also one occasion when it repeatedly froze before it could check for any device to boot from or even enter the BIOS. I'm starting to suspect the motherboard, but is there any possibility it could be something else (like the processor)?
I did identify one hard drive as bad, but the same problem happened with another one that i know works.
I already updated the BIOS, and i never overclocked it (i sure thought about it though).
Did you overclock or subject the poor Athlon FX-60 to temperatures above 75 degrees celsius?
If not, try flashing the bios to the latest version (the bios for this specific motherboard is here: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=ALiveXFire-eSATA2 , assuming that the board is an AsRock ALiveXFire-eSATA2, I could be wrong in my assumptions).
