Does a Core 2 Duo notebook processor (T9600) have a thermal paste or its equivalent already on it?
I was looking at the little instruction pamphlet that came with my new-in-box Core 2 Duo CPU, and it doesn't suggest anything about thermal paste. The top side of the core (where the thermal paste is applied, I know) has a mirrored-silver square elevation in the middle, and there's this maybe 0.5 mm line of what looks like dark gray, dried gel surrounding the square. Is this the stock thermal compound? And from what I gathered from forum-crawling, is it fine to install the CPU without adding any additional compound if I'm not going to be overclocking? Thanks in advance!
1) No, CPUs don't come with thermal paste.
2) No, that line isn't thermal paste.
3) No, it's NOT "fine" to install a CPU without thermal paste.
Spend the few dollars for a tube of thermal compound, spread a THIN FILM of it on the CPU before putting the heatsink on it (clean the heatsink off first). The compound shouldn't have any thickness, not even 1/64" - just a film, like a coat of very thin paint. If you don't coat the CPU, you might find that the computer shuts off in a few seconds because the heatsink isn't cooling the CPU enough.
