laptop cooling fan, why broken?
I recently broke a laptop cooling fan by blowing compressed air into it after taking it out of the laptop. As I was blowing the compressed air the fan suddenly stopped spinning. I put it back into the laptop, turned on the laptop, and then noticed it didn't work anymore. I read that one should secure the blades while blowing air at it to prevent damage, but my question is, why is it ok for the blades to spin while in the laptop, and not ok for them to spin via compressed air? I assume the fan spin much faster while in the computer than from air being blown at it...I'd assume it wouldn't matter how the fan spins...but I guess I was wrong.
And is there any remedy for this kind of issue? I see a green chip connected to some wires near the bearings, would it be safe to take that apart and see what happens?
I presume you were using compressed air from a canister, to clear accumulated dust from the fan blades? Did you blow the fan in the opposite direction it normally runs in? I've never heard it recommended that you should secure the fan blades first before cleaning, but I'm guessing that advice is designed to stop people from snapping what can be fairly fragile blades. It sounds like the fan's motor has seized up, in which case, bin it and buy a new fan; will cost you a few quid online, try Dabs.com or Maplin.co.uk - make sure you buy the right fan for your machine (check the make/model number, etc of your laptop)
