What is the difference between MIDI and audio channels when working on song production with a sound card?
And what are these things: an inspector, VST inputs, write and read, and clipping? I have just bought this equipment and software (cubase LE) and I am finding it really difficult to get my head around! Also, a definition of mono and sterio in relation to music production??
MIDI channels contain information for your synthesizer, it's information that tells your synth what to play. For example if you press a note on your keyboard it sends MIDI info saying, the note C was played for two beats, it also tells how hard you struck the key etc. The computer captures this information as MIDI data, when you play it back the synth replicates what you did exactly. The cool thing is you can change the sound or length or pitch very easily, you can turn a piano part into an organ part or flute or whatever with just a button push.
Audio tracks are actual audio as captured by a microphone. You can't really change the pitch more than 2-3 half steps before it becomes noticeable. You can cut and paste it, and add reverb, or other effects.
An inspector, lets you see the closeup details of your track, for example the exact notes and duration for midi, or the waveforms for audio.
VST inputs are plugins you can apply to a track. Some are instruments that make sound, like a software synth, some are effects like echo, reverb, compression etc.
Think of write and read, as recording and playback.
Clipping refers to going over your maximum loudness. The software and associated equipment, can only handle a certain volume. If you go louder than that volume, the audio is clipped off, resulting in distortion.
The terms floor and ceiling are actually used and they're a good analogy. Imagine your software as a room you want to fill with sound. If a sound is soft it's close to the floor, the louder it gets, the taller it gets and approaches the ceiling. You want your signal to fall somewhere in the middle. Your equipment makes noise by itself, because no circuit is absolutely quiet. If your signal is close to the floor, (quiet) you can hear that noise, if it bumps the ceiling (loud) you hear distortion. By keeping it in the middle, you've got a little room to play with.
Stereo refers to how far left or right a sound is placed. You've probably got some knobs or sliders marked L and R or panning. Try this, record a track of something, then with headphones or two speakers placed about 3 feet apart, move the knob to the L or R side. You'll notice that the sound moves from the center to the Left speaker to the Right speaker. Thats referred to as panning Left or Right.
Basically keep your bass drum, bass guitar and lead vocals dead center. You can pan guitars, pianos, backing vocals etc, a little left or right. Imagine you were looking at an acoustic band, the singer might be right in the middle with the drums behind him, the guitar player is a little to the left of him, the piano to the right etc. Use panning to recreate that.
Mono means everything is in the center. This tends to sound muddy because all the instruments are competing for the same sonic space, by spreading out the instruments your tracks have room to "breathe"
