Do I need a wireless card to use a dongle on my pc?
I've moved my pc upstairs I have a wireless router that works the laptops, but I used to have the tower modem wired into it, now I've moved it upstairs and don't want wires trailing everywhere so bought a dongle, but I cannot get it working? Does it need to have a wireless card fitting to make it work?
if you bought a USB WIFI dongle, then you will need to set it up with the SSID (like a "station ID") of your wireless router and match any security settings that you have on your router - like WEP key.
My router also has a list of devices that it will allow to connect to the internet, where the MAC address is listed on a table of security settings within the router.
If you are not at too great a distance from your router, and there is not too much junk (steelwork and brickwork) between router and PC, then the internal aerial of the USB dongle should connect OK.
Otherwise, you are looking at a PCI card, with external antenna.
