Impossible Bridges?
I was watching this on Nat. Geo. channel about the Rion - Antrion Bridge in Greece. I think they misled me though. They said that as they added concete to the floating tower assembly, it sank deeper and deeper into the water - eventually landing on the sea bed. Surely there would come a critical point where the mass of the structure would become too heavy and the whole thing would sink straight to the bottom.
Or..... is it that the part that they are extending above the water line is hollow and so as it grows, so the amount of air also grows, thus creating some kind of equilibrium in boyancy as the base of the tower sinks lower and lower?
They have a form that they fill with wet fast setting concrete. As the form sinks, they keep adding to the form and adding more concrete. It slowly sinks until it it hits bottom. Many bridges are done this way. Take a tall water glass, fill it half full of water and set it in water. It will float. Slowly add water to it and it will settle to the bottom of the sink (if the water in the sink is not deeper than the hight of the glass).
