Intel PRO/Wireless Adapter?
Last nite my Toshiba laptop did a power dump, whatever that may be, and for some reason all traces of my Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG adapter are gone. Under Network Connections it shows under the Wireless Network Connection but when I double click on it it does not show ANY wireless connections available, mine or otherwise. I tried repairing it but it won't because it can't connect to the wireless network. I'm not sure what my next step is to try and figure out what's either wrong or how to repair it. I'm not very technical so please bear with me. Thanks for any and all help.
Thanks so far for the answers. I did double check, and the wireless switch on the front is on. I'm going to try doing a system restore and if that doesn't work I'm going to try downloading the drivers. Thanks again
Sadly, the best thing you might try doing is to call tech support at Toshiba and start working that route. I know its a horrid thing to recommend, since you may end up talking to a tech that knows less than you (or may not be familiar enough with english that you can even understand them). However, if you have a internal wireless card that is no longer recognized by the OS, it may be that it has been disabled by the crash/dump of your system somehow. I recommend going to Toshiba because even if you are able to diagnose the problem on your own, if you need something repaired or replaced, your own investigation will be repeated (ad nauseum) by whatever tech support you get on the phone to help you. They won't believe you or your own investgation unless you follow their procedures. So, again, I would start with tech support and work from there.
That said, if the machine is out of warantee you are left with your own powers of investigation.
To start, your particular card (network card) is commonly built into many OEM laptops (companies like Toshiba) that include Intel chipsets with their systems. This is good because you can go to Intel's website and start to work the problem there.
But before going to Intel's site, I would recommend you checking your own system to see if the device is enabled ( and hasn't been somehow disabled at the driver level). To do that:
1. Right mouse over your "My Computer" icon.
2. Select "properties" in the mini-drop down menu..
3. the System properties applet will appear. From there, select the "Hardware" tab.
4. On the "Hardware" tab, select the "Device Manager" button
5. Once the Device Manager applet is launched you will see a list of device types in the window. Once of the types will be "Network adapters". Select the plus sign "+" to the left of the "Network adapters" icon. The list of Network adapters will expand.
6. You should now see your device listed in the "network adapters" tree.
7. If your device has a red X over its icon, it has been disabled. To re-enable it, simply right mouse click over it, then select "Enable".
8. If your device appears, but is enabled, then you may simply need to re-install the device driver or upgrade it. In fact, if it is enabled, it may be working, so you might just go try it out. If its still not working, I would look at the information below about the Intel website.
9. If your device does not even appear, then you have more serious problems. This means that it has been deleted from the device manager. One thing to try (that rarely works, but is worth a try) is to click the "Scan for hardware changes" icon at the top of this applet. If that does not work, it may mean the device has been damaged and is no longer recognized because it is inoperable.
At this point, if you haven't found any fix I would go to the Intel website for this product.
Start at: http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2200bg/
Where you will find the home page for that product of network device.
There is a few things you can do from there.
I would look at first identifying the specific device and revision (and its driver). You can do that by going here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?agr=N&ProductID=1637&DwnldID=8061
and downloading that identification tool and using it to determine the specific device/driver.
Once you diagnose if the driver can be seen by the application, you might simply upgrade the device (network adapter) with the latest driver. To do that, return to the previously mentioned Device Manager application (step 4/5 in the above list) and select your network adapter, then right mouse and "Update driver ..."
If that doesn't work you may simply go back to Toshiba and look for support there online... maybe you will get lucky.
