Balk Rule: Can a left-handed pitcher do a quick pick to first without stepping off the rubber?
A right handed pitcher can throw to first base without stepping off the rubber. When he does that, he slides his right foot toward 3rd base, then spins, steps toward first base, and throws. Can a lefty do a similar quick move to first? Can he slide his left foot toward third base (keeping his left foot in front of the rubber), then step to first and throw, all in a quick movement?
The balk rule is greatly mis-understood.
Left or right doesn;t matter.
Your move to first has to come from your
normal delivery. (using the set position,
not the windup)
You're not allowed to do anything to fake
out the runner. (such as using a hurry-up)
You have to stop at the set position.
Your lead foot cannot pass an imaginary line
toward first base.
We used to teach our runners to watch the
pitcher's swing foot. When that foot passed
this imaginary line toward first base, you
could take off. (the pitcher now has to go to
the plate)
The best time to steal is with two outs , a close
score game, and an off-speed pitch.
The battery also looks for a steal with one
out and 2 strikes on the batter.
