Backup System
What is included in a system image backup?
Does it also include all of my files including music, pictures etc.. or does it only include the system's OS and settings?
I am asking because I dont know if I need to make a separate backup for my files when I already have a system image backup

It depends on your software package that is making the image. In MY backup program, when I make a disk image, it is literally a copy, track for track, sector by sector, a literal duplicate of the existing disk. THAT is what an image SHOULD be for you as well. When you restore, each and every sector should restore to exactly what it was when you made the image. I routinely do this JUST before I install a software package, thereby making an updated image. Then, instead of counting on an uninstall program which usually is unreliable and mostly always leaves trash behind, I simply restore my image which restores the drive to the exact condition it was in before I installed the software. Check your documentation and read up on what it says for making an image of the hard disk. It SHOULD be a snapshot of every sector and every track on your hard disk. In my laptop, the hard disk has two partitions. The main active partition and the second partition which is JUST used for the image backup. I could use an external USB disk, but the laptop has a 120gb drive, and I felt 2-60gb partitions was not much of a sacrifice as it meant I did not have to carry around a separate drive to do the backup before trying a new software package. When I do a real backup in case my hard disk fails, I use a separate USB drive and I only back up files which .only takes about 10gb of disk space. If I have to recover, I'll simply reinstall all of the software and then restore my data files. If I used the image method, I would have to have an equal sized (60gb) or larger drive to restore to. By using the file backup, I could use a 20gb drive for the software installation and restore the 10gb of files and still have room to spare. For the file backup of my data, I use the MSBACKUP program which comes with windoze. My disk image program is a commercial backup program from Acronis and was a perk from when I used to be a network engineer/administrator.
