What would happen if you plugged a battery backup into itself?
What would happen if you plugged a battery backup into itself?
I'm not quite sure and don't have a spare UPS to test with. My logic is that one of three things will occur:
1. It will sense power on the plug and turn off battery power, and then cycle between those two functions.
2. It will sense power on the plug and turn off battery power, and without power from the plug, it'll just stay off.
3. ???
(Note that I'm not asking if a battery backup can charge itself, because that's idiotic, it'd drain much faster.)
Depends on the UPS. Some UPS don't like to see the output waveform when running on battery as their mains input, so they won't switch back to AC. Likewise some UPS don't like to be powered from a generator so they won't switch off battery mode.
If you try with a better quality UPS that has fairly clean output, it will toggle back & forth, dwelling only milliseconds in the AC mode each time, until the battery is depleted. hint: run the ac output of the UPS thru a ferro-res transformer to clean it up.
