Is there a difference between micro and mini atx motherboards?
I do believe you are asking about the mini-itx form factor and not the outdated and relatively unused min ATX form factor.
The mini ATX was a format specified by Intel for slightly smaller ATX boards bigger than micro ATX boards. There was to be a size difference of no more than 1 to 2 inches.
The mini-itx form factor is quite a bit smaller than the micro ATX. These were to be no more than 17 CM by 17CM or 6.75 by 6.75 inches. They were designed to be put in very small form factor cases such as HTPC ones or as with the Atom into netbooks. All have limited expansion connectors and peripheral connects. The emphasis here was on low power usage with a minimal size. VIA and Intel are the only real players in this area. You have a very limited selection of CPUs being Atom, VIA's C7 or Eden. None of these is in any way a high performing processor.
Both makers limit their respective chipsets to slower RAM and one, perhaps two RAM slots. Drive connectors rarely go higher than 2 with most having only one. Video is usually limited to some sort of IGP which combines with the limited horsepower of the CPU to result in poor video playback. There are occasional exceptions to this, such as Nvidia's ION chip or a PCI-Express X16 slot for a discrete GPU.
A micro ATX is simply a full sized ATX with high integration of connector and peripheral components such as LAN, audio and/or video with a good complement of drive connectors, (usually more than 2 but I have seen as high as 6). Memory is also at the same level as the then current ATX boards with perhaps one or two fewer RAM slots. These boards also have similar power requirements to the full sized boards. They will support the same CPUs as the full boards.
