Can you connect a laptop to a TV?
Is there a way to use standard A/V cables to connect a laptop to a TV set? Or are special cables required? Or is it only possible with a TV tuner card?
TV is a Sharp Aquos and laptops are HP.
And I have cables for assorted videogame consoles.
If a TV tuner is the only option, how much do they generally run and what is the best brand?
And are the TV tuners internal only, or are there external ones that can go into a USB/Wireless internet card/other slot/plug?
You can, if they have compatible ports.
- if both the laptop and TV have HDMI ports, use an HDMI cable.
- if both the laptop and TV have DVI ports, use a DVI cable.
- if one has an HDMI port and the other has a DVI port, you can use an HDMI or DVI cable with the appropriate adapter. You can also get HDMI-to-DVI cables (cable and adapter all in one).
The above are all the best choices and are equal in preference. The next option is only just a little bit worse than the above.
- if they both have "VGA" (HD15) connectors - this is a trapezoid-shaped connector with 15 pins or holes - just use a standard PC VGA cable.
The next option will give the same performance as the VGA cable would, if it works - but it might not work at all, or you might have trouble getting the video from the laptop to properly fill the screen.
- if the laptop has a VGA connector and the TV has component video (red, green, and blue RCA jacks), you can get a VGA to component "transcoder" for around $100.
The following two options are the worst choices. Regardless of the TV's resolution they will give detail only about equivalent to 640x480 on the computer screen.
- if both laptop and TV have S-video connectors (round jack a little less than 1/2" diameter, with four holes for pins) you can use an S-video cable. On the laptop, esp. if it's older, be sure to not confuse a PS/2 mouse or keyboard port with the S-video port. Sometimes the S-video port has extra pins in it for use with a "dongle" that provides other types of video jacks, but it will take an S-video cable directly. Check the laptop's manual if you're not sure.
- if both units have a composite video connector (RCA yellow jack) you can use a regular RCA video cable.
In all cases you MAY have to go into the display properties (in Control Panel, or just right-click on an empty area of your desktop and click Properties) to enable the second display and choose what you want to see on it. In some cases the second display will come up automatically, usually "mirror" mode (both screens show the same thing).
"TV Tuners" do not enter into it at all. A TV tuner is for using your laptop as a TV, or for recording from broadcast TV. An actual TV set is not involved with a TV tuner.
