graphics card? can my motherboard take agp or pci?
Without being too tech, I have a Packard Bell pc with a Packard Bell 551 motherboard (Gigabyte brand motherboard). According to systems profile program and my own visual inspection, this m/b has 3 x PCI slots and one AGP slot. The graphics card I currently have is not recopgnised by Windows 7 so I have to get a new graphics card. Does this mean that I can get either AGP (used at present) or use one of the spare PCI slots for the new graphics card to go in. I have to get something that Windows 7 and the m/b will recognise. So, what are my options?? Thanks

yes your Packard Bell 551 does support a agp x8 bus and 3 x standard pci buses(slots) however if you use a pci slot you will have the disadvantage of inferior transfer speeds... which will make most of todays games allmost unplayable
however allthough the agp bus has largely been replaced by the pci-express bus its still capable of running the majority of the latest games,granted at lower detail and resolutions
there are however two fairly powerful agp cards that spring to mind and the first of these is the "HIS ATI Radeon HD 4670 ICEQ 1024MB DDR3 HDMI AGP Graphics Card"( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-024-HS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1842 ) ... as agp cards go this a pretty powerful and its specs are quite good... these include a 750mhz core clock and 1gb of gddr3 memory clocked at 1600mhz.... along with the capable 128bit memory interface and 200 stream processors and you have a agp card that should run the latest games... however as i previously mentioned you will need to tweak detail settings on more demanding games to acheive optimal peformance
the next card i recommend is the "SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 3850"( http://www.okobe.co.uk/ws/product/SAPPHIRE+Radeon+HD+3850+512MB+GDDR3+SDRAM+Graphics+Card/1000006226?ref=1q4bs ) ... this has been documented as the worlds fastest agp card and since i have used on of these i can agree with this
it has a powerful 256bit memory interface which equates to better frame rates especially at higher resolutions... and specs include a 600mhz core clock and 512mb of gddr3 memory running at 1650mhz ddr effective.... throw in 320 stream processors and you have what is the best agp card you can buy,and since most manufactuers have stopped making cards in the agp bus it will probally stay that way
as you stated you could also use one of your pci slots however the problem here is the cards avalible in this bus.. most of them are budget low end cards and running via the pci bus you wont get anywhere near the frame rates needed to run them properly... so i wouldnt even bother with pci cards
as one of the other answers stated you could completely replace your motherboard with a motherboard that supports a pci-express x16 bus... however the problem here is you will allmost probally need to replace your memory aswell... and this can become very expensive
one way around this is to invest in a motherboard bundle... this comprises of the motherboard,memory and processor(plus fan ect )... and this can turn a ageing pc with a agp slot into a modern pci-express gaming system
you can buy a dual core motherboard bundle for around £100 and one of these is the "
Novatech Motherboard Bundle - Intel Celeron E3400 - 2Gb 1333Mhz DDR3 - Intel G41 Motherboard"( http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/motherboardbundles/Novatech/MBB-342G43.html ) ... this uses the excellent celeron E3400,and before you say "argh celeron" this is nothing like the older celerons.... the E3400 is based around the wolfdale core which is much like core 2 duo,s..... theres also 2gb of fast ddr3 memory running at 1333mhz..... and the g41 chipset motherboard has all modern features including a pci-express x16 slot,4 x sata ports and much more
for around £150 you can get the "Novatech Motherboard Bundle - AMD II X4 640 - 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 - AMD 690G Motherboard - Onboard ATI Radeon 1250 Graphics"( http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/barebones/Novatech/MBB-6404G3.html ) i wont talk too much about this bundle but the quad core athlon and 4gb of ddr3 ram would make a excellent basis to any pc.... and compared to what you currently using it would be a dramatic improvement
